The controller within the meaning of the GDPR is:
Vladimir DaniloFull details in the legal notice.
This policy covers the Setonomy iPhone app and this website (setonomy.com), which only contains information about the app and these legal texts. The former web version of Setonomy was shut down on September 28, 2026.
Setonomy stores what you enter: workouts and plans, completed sessions with sets and when they started, weights, reps, RPE and notes – and, if you turn it on, your heart rate –, custom exercises, your own personal records, body-weight entries, your optional training profile (experience level, training style, training days per week, minutes per session), and your settings – including, if you enter them for heart rate zones, your year of birth and your maximum heart rate. An interrupted session is saved so that it can continue after a restart.
All of this data stays exclusively in the app's storage on your iPhone. The app does not connect to the internet for its features and does not transmit any data to us or to third parties.
Body weight, heart rate and workout data may allow conclusions about your health. Because it never leaves your device, we do not process it; it remains under your sole control.
In Settings, you can connect Setonomy to Apple Health. It is off by default. You decide what Setonomy may do: in Setonomy for each type of data and direction, and again in the iOS permission prompt. You can revoke access at any time in the Health app.
The exchange with Apple Health happens exclusively on your device. Setonomy does not transmit health data to us or to third parties, does not use it for advertising or marketing, and does not itself store it in iCloud. Like all app data, weigh-ins taken over from Health may be included in an Apple device backup (see "Apple device backups"). How Apple Health processes your data – for example syncing via iCloud – is up to your settings with Apple and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Setonomy requires no registration or sign-in, not even for Premium: the subscription is tied to your Apple Account, not to an account with us. The app contains no analytics or tracking software, no ad networks, and no third-party software components (SDKs). There is no tracking within the meaning of Apple's App Tracking Transparency.
You can export your data as a backup file (JSON), optionally encrypted with a password (AES-256-GCM, key derived from your password via PBKDF2). Only you and your device know the password; we cannot recover it.
You share the file yourself through the iOS share sheet, for example to the Files app, iCloud Drive, or by email. You decide where it goes; the chosen service's privacy terms apply. When importing, Setonomy reads a file you select and stores its content only on your device.
With Premium you can share a workout as a QR code or link. Setonomy creates both on your iPhone. They contain only the workout's name and its exercises with sets, reps or duration, rest times, warm-up sets, and how the weight counts, plus the muscle groups of your own exercises – no weights, no history, and nothing about you. You pass the code on yourself, for example by showing it or sending it through the iOS share sheet; the chosen service's privacy terms apply.
When someone opens the link, Setonomy adds the workout on their device, only after a preview and a tap on “Add workout”. Without Setonomy, the page setonomy.com/w opens with the way to the App Store. The workout's data sits in the link after the “#” sign. That part is not sent to the server and therefore doesn't end up in its log files (see “Hosting of this website and email”).
If you allow it, Setonomy notifies you when a rest period ends and shows the current session on the Lock Screen (Live Activity). The app creates both on your device; no notification server is involved. You can revoke permission at any time in the iOS Settings.
If you add a Setonomy widget, it shows your training week and your next workout on the Home Screen or Lock Screen. The app stores the values for it on your device, in an area that only Setonomy and its widgets can read. On the Lock Screen, anyone holding your iPhone can see them; to remove a widget, edit the screen.
If you use iCloud Backup or back up your iPhone to a computer, the app's data may be included. This depends on your Apple settings and is governed by Apple's privacy policy; we have no access to it.
Apple handles the download of the app; Apple's privacy policy applies. We do not learn who you are.
If you have enabled "Share With App Developers" on your iPhone (Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple provides us with crash reports and aggregated usage statistics. They contain no workout data and cannot be attributed to any person by us. The legal basis is your consent given to Apple (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw there at any time. We use these reports only to fix bugs.
If you take part in testing via TestFlight, by invitation or through the public link, Apple provides us with your name and email address if we invited you. If you send us feedback through TestFlight, we receive it with your screenshots, the email address of your Apple Account and the device details TestFlight attaches: model, iOS and app version, language, time zone, carrier, connection type, battery level, storage, screen size and any paired Apple Watch. We also receive the crash reports you share through TestFlight. We use this data only to run the test and improve the app (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and delete it when the test ends or on your request.
Setonomy offers an optional "Premium" subscription, monthly or yearly. Apple handles purchase, payment, renewal, and cancellation through your Apple Account; Apple's Privacy Policy applies. We do not receive your name, your email address, or any payment details.
The app asks Apple on your device whether a subscription is active and until when, and stores that status on your device so that Premium also works offline. None of this is sent to us or to third parties; we do not run a server for it. Apple provides us with reports on sales and subscriptions, for example by country and product; they contain no names, contact details, or payment details.
This website and the mailbox support@setonomy.com are hosted by STRATO GmbH, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany, on servers in Germany. When you open the site, your browser transmits technically necessary data that STRATO processes in server log files:
This data is technically required to operate the site. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is the secure and stable provision of the website. STRATO processes the data on our behalf under a data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR. Details are set out in STRATO's privacy policy (in German).
The website sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device.
We do not share, sell, or use any data for advertising. This expressly includes data from Apple Health. The only exceptions are the processing by Apple and STRATO described above.
You can delete individual entries directly in the app. Uninstalling the app permanently removes all data stored in the app, except backup files you exported yourself and Apple device backups, which you manage yourself. What Setonomy wrote to Apple Health stays there until you delete it in the Health app.
Where we process personal data about you (for example as a TestFlight tester), you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR), and the right to withdraw consent. You may also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Your workout data stays with you; you control it at all times.
Setonomy is not directed at children under 16. Because the app does not collect or transmit personal data, no particular risks arise from this.
If Setonomy's functionality changes – for example through sync – we will update this policy beforehand.
Questions about privacy can be sent to support@setonomy.com. If you write to us, we process your email address and your message in order to reply (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and delete both once your request has been dealt with, unless a statutory retention obligation applies.
